To alert pedestrians to the approach of this often-silent hatchback, the Prius Prime generates an eerily human-sounding electronic tone, like a choir-loft of castrati, growing louder then fading away as the car picks up speed. Having lived to a biblical age, I’ve seen some crazy things. I’ve seen the Prius—whose owners were once mocked and scorned as virtue-signaling eco-weenies—become a counterargument for fossil fuel’s defenders opposing vehicle electrification.

For Canadians, Christmas came early this year. The E-Ray has the distinction of being not only the most vigorously accelerating ’Vette in history; it is also, weirdly, the most refined, versatile, usable and commodious. Our test car—in the 3LZ trim package ($123,705, as tested)—was a leather-wrapped luxury launch, buoyed on the adaptive suspension and supple, multi-mode magnetic dampers.

The name recalls an earlier micro-scooter called the Motocompo, sold only in Japan. The atrium-style space now displays some of Honda’s historical collection: game-changing cars, such as the Accord and Civic; life-changing motorcycles (CB 750, Gold Wing); outboard motors, lawn mowers and the tiniest, most adorable gas-powered generators evah, designed to run itty-bitty ’60s-era TVs.

Considering the price difference between regular and premium—in my home state of North Carolina last week, 78 cents per gallon—that’s a pretty big ask. The 2024 Mazda3 Hatchback Turbo Premium Plus doesn’t insist that you buy premium. If you put regular gas in the Mazda , you will feel a maximum of 227 hp under your haunches; if premium, the figure jumps to 250 hp.

The electromechanical thingamabob aboard the Honda Accord Hybrid Touring ($38,985, as tested) represents late-stage petroleum brilliance, a design that renders conventional stepped transmissions obsolete and consigns traditional CVTs (continuously variable transmissions) to the moaning hell they deserve.
